UNC Asheville Partners with PCI to Create an Online and Print Alumni Directory 

The Office of Alumni Engagement & Annual Giving in conjunction with Advancement Services is working to strengthen the networking connections and opportunities within the alumni community. As part of this initiative, we are starting a data verification project and creation of a new printed alumni directory. This directory will help alumni connect with each other and the University and will be published by PCI.

The University has contracted with Publishing Concepts (PCI) to verify the accuracy of alumni data currently on file. PCI will begin mailing postcards and sending emails to alumni beginning October 2018. The communication requests alumni to call a telephone number to verify or update their alumni profile. When alumni call, they will be offered the opportunity to purchase a printed or digital directory. You are under no obligation to purchase anything. Regardless of whether or not you purchase the directory, we thank you for updating your information. Your updates will appear in the FREE Online Alumni Directory.

PCI is a trusted partner of UNC Asheville and is strictly using the alumni contact information for this project only.

I received an email/postcard/phone call from a company asking for my personal information. They said they were working on a directory for UNC Asheville. Is this a legitimate project, or is it a scam?

We have partnered with PCI (also known as Publishing Concepts) to produce our new alumni directory.  PCI is a company located in Dallas, TX that publishes directories for educational institutions, fraternities, sororities and military organizations across the nation. This project allows UNC Asheville to receive important updates to our database so we know more about our alumni and how we can better serve you and future alumni.


How do I know my information will only be used for directory purposes?

UNC Asheville has a contractual agreement with PCI that states:
a. The names, addresses and information provided to PCI by UNC Asheville for the publication of the Directory will be held confidential by PCI, except to the extent that they are utilized in, or in the preparation of, the Directory and except as required by court order or law.
b. The Directory will be made available only to alumni of UNC Asheville. Upon completion of the project, PCI will return to UNC Asheville any and all electronic files that have been supplied by UNC Asheville or produced by PCI in connection with the production of the Directory.


Did you sell my contact information to PCI?

No, we did not sell your contact information. PCI is strictly using alumni contact information for this project only. They are a trusted partner of hundreds of colleges and universities around the country.


Why isn’t someone from UNC Asheville contacting alumni?

UNC Asheville contracted with an outside vendor due to the internal resource capacity of the Office of Alumni Engagement and Annual Giving. A third party staffing a phone bank gives us the resources needed to continue strengthening the UNC Asheville network and ensures the directory is comprehensive, accurate, and completed on time.


Why would I want a print directory?

Our last print directory was published many years ago, and this provides us the opportunity to better connect our alumni and ensure we have the most up-to-date information. Some people do not have Facebook or LinkedIn, but still want the ability to connect with their classmates.


Why do I need to update my information?

Your participation in the directory project helps keep you connected to your alma mater and to your fellow UNC Asheville alumni.


How will I be contacted?

Mail and email communications from PCI will begin in late October/early November 2018. All communications will include a toll-free phone number for you to call to verify your personal information. Once your information is updated, your name will be removed from future mail and email communications for the project. Towards the end of this project PCI will call alumni who have not yet responded. 


I would like to verify and update my information. How may I do this?

If you have received a postcard or an email with a telephone number, you may call the number to speak with a dedicated representative for the UNC Asheville project. The representative will verify all the information we have on file for you and make any updates where needed. One of the numbers for the UNC Asheville alumni is 866-379-1993.

If you have received an email with an embedded link, you may go to the online site to review your information.  If you have questions, you may call PCI’s customer service desk at 1.800.982.1590.


Can I give my information to PCI online instead of via phone?

PCI provides a phone number instead of a website, so they can have the human interaction to ensure accurate data verification and to provide the opportunity to purchase a directory.


Who will be included in the directory?

The directory will include all UNC Asheville alumni unless they have specifically requested to not be in the directory. If you are in the online directory, you will be in the print one as well.


Can I opt out of participating in this directory?

What if I don’t want to be listed in the directory? What if I don’t want certain pieces of information listed?

PCI can still update your information for us and will honor your specific request to exclude all or parts of your biographical data from the publication.


Can anyone purchase a directory?

The UNC Asheville Alumni Directory is available for sale only to UNC Asheville alumni.


If my name is listed in the directory, am I obligated to purchase a copy?

Everyone will be given the opportunity to purchase his or her own copy of the directory. If you provide your information, your name will be listed regardless of whether you decide to purchase a copy.


When will I receive my directory?

The total duration of the directory project is about 12 months. Since we are begining the project in October 2018, the directories will be distributed in October 2019.


Can I choose some or all of my information not to be printed in the directory?

When you call to update your information, you can tell the representative what information you would prefer to have excluded. You may also communicate this information to the PCI customer service desk (1.800.982.1590) or to the Alumni Association.

I ordered a directory/package over the phone and would like to cancel my order. How do I do this?

Call the PCI customer service help desk at 1.800.982.1590, and they will take care of this for you.


Did UNC Asheville spend a lot of money on this project?

UNC Asheville has paid no money to PCI for this service. PCI, as a business, attempts to make revenue through the sale of directories.
